The First Steps into the New Year

January 17, 2011

2011 is here and the first two weeks have now passed. Have you broken your New Years’ resolutions yet?

This year, I set some goals, rather than making resolutions that I would forget about within the first month of the year, as so often happens with those resolutions to lose weight and make cold calls. Read more…

Thoughts on the day after Christmas

December 26, 2010

Christmas is one of those holidays that is a memory holder – brings me back to all of the other Christmases I have celebrated over the years, from the time I was very young through my married years, and all of the strange Christmases I have had since I broke away from traditions.

Childhood Christmas memories:

Before we went to bed on Christmas eve, there were always a fair number of presents under the tree. We were allowed to open one present – Mom always picked out the one she knew was new pajamas – so we would sleep in our new pjs until morning when the picture-taking ensued. Read more…

My First Book!

November 26, 2010

I’ve been an avid writer since I was about 8 years old. I remember finding a notebook that I had from third grade; on every page was a story that I had written. They were third grade quality, or maybe fourth or fifth grade quality, but the point is, I was writing, even back then. When I was in high school, I chose to major in English in college because I knew I wanted to write.

But life has a way of sidetracking me. I put writing aside time and time again for this adventure or that one. I’ve done a lot, learned a lot, played hard, and journaled a lot. I have about 15 archive boxes full of old journals. I’m not sure why I keep them. I have this fantasy that when I decide to give up this mortal shroud, someone will discover them and publish them. Thanksgiving 2010

November 25, 2010

In the first couple of years after I got divorced (back in 1990-1991), I remember the feeling of freedom that came from having NO obligations to spend Thanksgiving with family. I had a day to spend any way I liked. Don’t get me wrong. I love my family and I love to spend time with them. There’s just a difference between doing so because you want to and because you have to. (There’s a lesson in that!)

The first year, I took a long walk at Blue Hill, our closest “mountain” just south of Boston – it was a mile from bottom to top; not a bad hike, and very beautiful. The air was crisp, the last of the foliage was mostly brown, clinging here and there to bare branches, but mostly crunching under my feet. I’ll never forget it. I was in love with the world. Big Vision = Meaningful Life

November 20, 2010

I was talking with a friend of mine today about the idea of service, and how it is such an essential part of having a life worth living. Every time I say something like, “I’d like to do that,” or “I’d like to have that,” he then asks me, “And what are you willing to give to have that?” It’s all about giving. Read more…

Why I love being an Entrepreneur

November 12, 2010

This morning, I was reading blogs to which I subscribe and one person wrote about work – and how much time seems to be spent in meetings, in planning for the future, etc. In other words, we tend to spend less time actually DOING productive work.

It’s been over two years since I have had a “job.” However, I find that I am productive every day – and I am productive doing things I love to do. Read more…

Kirby

November 4, 2010

So, here’s the deal. A few months ago, Avery had applied for a free gift and the person who called insisted on making an appointment and wanted to make sure that both of us were there. That was no easy task with our schedules, but we found a time that worked for both of us and set the date.

When they arrived at the appointed time, they had with them a Kirby vacuum cleaner, and a box full of attachments – and our free gift, which was a cheap socket set. They had told us the appointment would only take an hour at the most, but over two hours later, they were still going strong – vacuuming our rugs, our upholstery, etc. and showing us how much dirt was actually embedded deep below the surface. The sales rep explained about how dead skin is living in our sofas and our mattresses. It was really gross to think of it, and even worse, to see the evidence of it on his little discs that caught what was sucked up. Read more…

What’s new and different?

November 2, 2010

Has it really been so long since I last posted? What a whirlwind month it’s been!

Avery and I took over Friday night classes at Alpha Books in downtown Phoenix, and that’s been keeping us on our toes. Read more…

I am love

October 12, 2010

Last night I couldn’t sleep, and when that happens, I usually listen to some hypnotherapy programs on my iPod, which inevitably have me in dreamland in no time. Last night, however, they didn’t, and so after a while, I switched to music. I had a playlist of healing new age music which I thought would soothe me, and so I put that on. But suddenly, a voice I didn’t recognize came on singing a song called, “I am Love,” and I found myself intently taking in the lyrics and feeling them in the depth of my soul. Read more…
