Cherishing the moments

April 8, 2012

“Guard well your spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds. Discard them and their value will never be known. Improve them and they will become the brightest gems in a useful life.”
–Ralph Waldo Emerson

This morning, I awoke early, and lay in bed as the sun brightened in the sky, just listening to the birds chirping, greeting the day. I decided it was much too lovely to stay in bed, so I quietly got up, and with journal in hand, tiptoed out of the bedroom wrapped in my soft, fluffy bathrobe, made myself some coffee, and sat on the couch, sipping coffee, pen poised above the paper before me. I even opened the door a crack so I could feel some of that cool, fresh air wafting around my face as I wrote.

I was immediately struck with the holiness of the moment. For Christians, today is Easter, and I could feel the hush of the wonder of the miracle of transmutation which was exhibited when Jesus rose from the dead, thus signifying a new chance at life. Today is also in the middle of Passover, when the Israelites were freed from the slavery of Egypt – a people emancipated to begin life anew.

I was reminded of my own celebrations of this time of year – the Spring Equinox which heralds in a burst of natural energy geared toward mating and fertility as the sun kisses the earth, bringing forth fresh new blossoms and babies of all species.

I could feel the sanctity of life; the exuberance of this time of year as well as the the preciousness of the birth of a new moment, filled with the expectancy of all that life has to offer.

The message is simple. Be aware of the moments. Treasure them. Keep them. Feel their fullness. And in so doing, you will be filled with all that you need to have all that you want in life. It is in these moments of peace that we are assured once again of the eternal cycles of life, of the order that maintains all, even when we forget.

As the day progresses, the hustle and bustle of activity claim me, but the memory of those moments this morning live on in my soul, and color the day with a new vibrancy.

May your day be filled with beauty and peace.
